All of us make mistakes, there is a saying that if you own up to your mistakes, you can
change for betterment. Many of us understand the meaning of this saying, however most of
us do not dare to admit our errors in fear of being reprimanded or losing our face. Naturally
this results in many people running away from their mistakes, or when confronted, these
people will deny any wrongdoing, or suggest that it’s the fault of others that ultimately
resulted in them making the mistake. Why do they react in such a way? I believe this is
because they have never been given the chance to make their own choice independently
and have not learnt to deal with the results that come with the choices they made including
failure. Since young, one is taught that one must not fail, resulting in the fear of failing, the
fear of being undermine by other, hence not being able to humbly admit their errors and
take full responsibility.
I believe that the lack of people taking up responsibility in society nowadays is a direct result of how one is being taught back home. Since young, children have been trained to follow instructions and not raised to have independent thinking. Just follow everything that mum and dad says…many decisions are made by their parents. This means that they do not have to take responsibility of everything they do because they are just following their parents’ instruction.
Regardless of the outcome of our choices, we should learn to try out different things and be
bold to face the consequences, this is the beginning of taking responsibility. When we do
this, we have ownership, this helps us to grow and learn without ceasing. When we do
something wrong, we must own up, admit, reflect, learn and improve. We can only advance
if we dare to own up to our faults, in the process, earn the respect and trust of others.
